Introduction

Restaurant owners are quickly realizing the importance of having a website. Many of these websites were quickly built by themselves, by a friend, or by hiring a designer. The team over at BentoBox noticed that a number of these websites lacked the basic practices and standards of a good restaurant website. We knew we had the tools to help restaurants succeed but how can we quickly educate and inform these busy restaurant owners about the shortcomings of their website?

The goal of the Restaurant Report is to educate and empower restaurants to understand the flaws on their websites while guiding them to the solution. With the help of the Restaurant Report, BentoBox was able to help more restaurants succeed in their mission in hospitality.

Competitive Analysis

We conducted a competitive analysis as this would help the team understand similar products that already exist. None of the products offered restaurant-specific needs but offered similarities in SEO, usability, mobile optimization, and so on. The key takeaways were:

  • Email validations - required for leads.

  • A preview of highlighted improvements to immediately call attention to the user.

  • Strong usage of iconography and color rating.

Ideation

The flow was kept simple as our intent was to inform, educate, and market to the users. The flow has two goals:

  • Educate and Inform non BentoBox users about the pros and cons of their website.

  • Advertise - by inputting BentoBox websites, users will see satisfaction results indicating their website is up to date with the latest best practices. This helps BentoBox market our websites as the golden example to follow by.

Copy and Wireframes

I worked closely with the product managers and CEO to determine the voice of the copy while designing the wireframes. Majority of the information we used already exist as they are BentoBox’s best practices and standard.

Visual Design Exploration

For the visual design exploration, I introduced two art directions to the team:

Option A
Clean and minimal design that subtly integrates Bentobox’s branding. The design incorporates BentoBox’s colors and abstract close-ups of the BentoBox logo. The Imagery showcases BentoBox websites.

Option B
Restaurant-image driven. Images showcasing dishes of food and restaurant-related items (receipts, utensils, menu).

Final Design

The team decided on Option B. As much as we wanted to market the BentoBox branding, we felt that Option B resonated better with our users, the restaurant owners.

Outcome

Prior to launching, the team determined the best spot to advertise the Restaurant Report was to include it in the BentoBox’s homepage banner. The sales team notified us that a new portion of their inquiries was coming from the Restaurant Report within the following weeks. It was great news as it meant restaurant owners were now able to understand the shortcomings of their website and able to take action with BentoBox.
